This is a linear game. Walk down this hall then walk down another hall etc. Also you can not jump in this game. Your character is glued to the floor at all times which gives me a trapped feeling. Mario could jump and he was a fat plumber. Batman should be able to jump.

Dont get me wrong, this game is killer. The fighting rocks, the story has depth, and it stays true to its roots. This is the first Comic book game done right. However, after playing the PS3 Version, and being able to fight as the joker, i was kinda bummed that i couldn’t do that.

But with that said, a must have, all the way.

Just finished playing Batman: Arkham Asylum and it occurs to me that the true single player shooter/RPG is dead, long live the shooter/RPG. I say this because I finished B:AA in a little over a day. Remember when Zelda or Silent Hill or Final Fantasy or Metal Gear provided weeks of immersive escapist delight? Now, these kinds of single player experiences have basically been given lip service and effectively jettisoned in exchange for gratuitous (albeit cool) super-graphics, boring and useless cut scenes (I want to play I don’t want to watch) and worst of all expanded on-line circle jerkage. Really, with an environment like Silent Hill to suck you in and scare the crap out of you for three solid, befuddling weeks, do I really care if I can enter an online world where I’m competing against some angst-ridden, suicidal, pimply faced, vapid, goth pre-adolescent pre-teen with mommy/daddy issues? Oh, and not just like one of them, but, like, dude, like hundreds, like yo? Please, bring back the day where an old fart like me can fire up the X-Box or the Playstation (not the Wii, give me a break), and look forward to weeks and weeks of kick butt shooter/RPG action and adventure and frights and delights. You can take your on-line mosh pits and shove them. Somebody, please, bring back a true single player gaming experience!

first the good. mark hamill, scarecrow, and the stealth rooms. mark hamill is still the best sounding joker even though he sounds a little out of practice. scarecrow looks amazing and the scarecrow fights are some of the most fun parts of the game. and the stealth, sneaking up on people and choking them out or stringing them up from gargoyles is dangerously fun.

on the other hand, the combat is bland and for a man trained to the peak of human ability batman doesn’t hit all that hard so you knock down guys 2 or 3 times before you knock them out. the counter system is simple enough but overall it’s kind of boring. and almost every big boss fight throws a number of regular henchmen at you which in all honesty takes away from the fun of the fights.

the story plays out like a survival horror game. the story was what i had the most hope for and it turns out to be crap. batman turns into another long line of people who graduated top of their class in “watching horrible things happen” there’s a scene in arkham asylum where the joker tosses a guard into electrified water killing him. and batman watches it happen nunplussed. batman has a pretty lengthy history of not doing that. and it’s not the only incident like that in the game, there are plenty of cutscenes where a well placed batarang or a quick dive might save a life or alter the outcome of a situation where batman sits and watches things happen.

Croc looks awsome and i was really looking forward to the chance to fight him. but the croc fight is a joke, you never get to lay a hand on him. the bane fight also is pretty crap. infact the final boss battle against joker is so disapointing i almost didn’t finish it.

batmans gadgets are cool mostly, but there’s alot of them and the uses overlap, you get a grapple and a zip line tool, they could easily have been one thing. you get a hacking device that overloads electical circuts to break doors with, it’s a lame little gadet, and it means that everytime you encounter a locked door from that point on you crouch down and fiddle with it like it’s a cell phone and you gotta send a quick text. kinda breaks the flow of the game.

the riddler puzzles are fun and the character bios are neat little bits of nostalgia if your familiar with the history of batman, but i found myself far more interested in finding them and reading the bios than playing the game, the patient interviews are a nice touch, i enjoyed them alot.

overall i’d say not a bad game, but not a very good one either, it’s more of an oportunity to show off the batman villains and pay homage to joker than do anything batman related though.

Overall its a pretty solid and fun game. I have only played about 4 hours worth. The only negatives I really have are; redundant crawling through ventilation shafts, swinging from gargoyle to gargoyle, and all of the inmates look exactly alike. You can take your time and explore and not worry about the game rushing you along. The controls are pretty straight forward and I have no complaints. I bought this game with some reluctance, but I have to say I am happy with the purchase, and I can’t say that about a lot of games that get over hyped and are a flat out disappoint.
